Industry-leading scope 3 carbon reporting scheme delivers benchmark for TCi

Breaking ground with a carbon accounting pilot scheme that could be a standard solution for the sector.

TCi has achieved a major milestone in its journey to measure scope 3 emissions, through collaborative engagement with business and supply chain expertise, and top UK research institution.

TCi was invited to engage in the pilot by SWMAS and delivered through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the University of Plymouth. The collaboration provided an opportunity to test the process by using available information from a large SME, with a typically complex supply chain.

By aggregating high quality statistical values against the most reliable company data, it has been possible to establish a baseline assessment with measurable integrity score.

Sustainability Manager, Ben Gibbs commented; “Compared with the relatively straightforward task of measuring scope 1&2 emissions, Scope 3 analysis is quite a daunting task. Most of our supply chain partners are just starting out on their carbon monitoring journeys, so there’s very little direct data available to us. This reporting process has effectively squared that circle to provide a ‘best possible’ baseline from which to work”

TCi is no stranger to carbon accounting, having measured scope 1&2 emissions since 2018, achieving strong year-on-year intensity reductions and pledging to offset remaining emissions from July 2022. This latest development puts the company ahead of many, much larger contractors and it is hoped that the process will be made available throughout the construction industry in the future.

Alex Perkis, Managing Director at TCi, said; “This has the potential to be something of a gamechanger for us, and will certainly affect the ways in which we select and monitor our supply chain partners. Our goal is to reduce the carbon intensity of our operations and this is the first stage in setting the targets that will govern our performance.”

Next steps are already underway and include working with recommendations from the report and a carbon training programme to share with internal staff and suppliers.
