Epic journey ‘joins the dots’ between TCi, Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.
Taking in 12 counties on the 700km route, TCi’s Marketing & Sustainability Manager, Ben Gibbs will be following ‘Britain’s oldest highway’ by bicycle. He’ll be setting off from TCi HQ in Barnstaple, heading over Exmoor to Hinkley Point, then on down to Lyme Regis to pick up the Old Chalk Way which will take him across the country to Bury St Edmunds, and from there he will head across to the Suffolk coast at Sizewell. The challenge begins on Thursday 14th August and should take around 7 days. He’ll be camping along the route and carrying all his gear.
Reflecting on the task ahead, he explained; “It’s certainly not the longest journey I’ve ever planned, but The Old Chalk Way is a significantly off-road cycle route, which presents a whole host of extra challenges, and it’s pretty hilly too. I won’t be able to just get my head down and blast along tarmac to get the distance in. It will be technical and at times painfully slow.”
Ben will be raising funds for TCi’s ‘chosen charity’, Breast Cancer Now, and doing what he can to raise some awareness at either end of the ride.
Atlantic coast – Bristol Channel – English Channel – North Sea
Challenges along the way will, of course, include the Great British summer weather – hopefully August will be kind, but wet trails could make things hard going. There’s also a fair amount of climbing, totalling 8000m of elevation – that’s 5 miles of vertical ascent! It’s also unavoidably holiday season, which wasn’t the best planning, but hopefully there will still be camping spaces.
